Home!

0

Just a quick little note to say that we made it safely home, we had our welcome home party on 12 June and I arrived back in Canberra on 13 June.

I will do a ride report… once I can get my head around the immensity of the trip!  I also have heaps of photos to upload to the site – I might try and get to that over the weekend, seeing as the 7 is spending the weekend at the mechanics (just waiting on a couple of seals after his post-epic-ride service).

A big thank you to everyone for all your support!

Cheers,

Mel.

Far out, it’s been 7 days since I wrote my last blog and well, I may have to catch up on my blogs tomorrow night cos I’m too tired to write tonight.
We did 420 kms today from Perth to Geralton. What a very nice place it is, very different to what I expected. I suppose I was expecting more so a country feel as opposed to a beachside feel, I’m not sure why. Great weather today, it was just perfect. Blue skies, great clouds for most of the morning and as we moved on the clouds disappeared to leave clear blue skies. Tshirt and singlet under the leathers was very comfortable. It really was an awesome day to be on 2wheels.

We awoke feeling a little dusty this morning, after sharing a few drinks and some dinner with Joanne and Serg. I went to primary school and high school with Jo and hadn’t met her husband Serg beforehand. We all had a terrific night, shared lots of laughs, sold stickers with Jo, and of course took plenty of self portraits. Good fun.

Mel and I had a late departure after sharing a yummy big brekky complete with hash browns and baked beans. My fave. We lugged our gear down the lift …. Hey, it was still an effort to get the gear to and from the lifts … apparently my explorer bag weighs bout 22kg at the moment … there was a set of scales at the YHA we stayed at. I have a pic of it somewhere. I’d already loaded the saddle bags on the bike before spotting the scales, but at a guess they’d have to be bout 10kgs, which means I’m doubling bout 30-35kgs. I know one thing, and that is when we took all the gear off our bikes and road out to the lighthouse and to watch the sunset where the southern and Indian oceans meet they felt very light indeed. The sunset was fantastic, the clouds brilliant and it was picturesque. We went to the pub to check out something for dinner, but ended up walking to the chinese restaurant and having scrummy chinese for dinner. The lady owner was shocked that we ate everything we ordered, but hey we were hungry.

Signing on 13th May? 12.08 Sydney time (10.08pm here), oh and its Thursday, I believe…. Its getting harder to keep track tbh.
Today we rode from Quabba blow hole to Exmouth 350odd kms. We pulled up at Exmouth on exactly 8,000kms to date. Chilled out, swam in the pool and sunbaked, drank champagne, caught up on washing and had a yummy dinner at the pub.
Hoping to go snorkelling tomorrow (assuming our new flippers n goggles fit lmao) … yeh, we should be kids size shouldn’t we?

Well, we are now at the Lighthouse caravan park in our tents once again and its soooo windy that I’m glad Ive got a heavy explorer bag or my tent may well be blown away, with me in it. Today we had a glorious day. Last night we spent the night in the Big 4 caravan park at Exmouth. We spent the afternoon in the pool and then drinking champagne til the sun went down and went to the pub close by and shared some fancy morocon meatballs which were very nice. Stumbled back to camp, ok I stumbled back to camp and we had a pretty good nights sleep.
We awoke early as usual and it was very windy so our plans of spending the day snorkelling were a tad dubious. So we walked into town, had a coffee and shared a ‘brumby’ muffin … egg, bacon, tomato and cheese. It was yum, but we shoulda got one each (especially cos Mel got all the egg).
We strolled back to camp and started our usual ritual of packing up. We had left by 10ish and decided to go and check out the reefs despite the wind, as it seemed a waste that we rode all this way to not spend the day snorkelling and lazing around in the sun. We ended up at a really nice beach. We parked the bikes, grabbed our valuables and stripped down to our bikini’s. I was quick to grab the mask and snorkel and check out what I could see. Well, not long and I was laying on the beach only to realise I had cut my foot pretty badly on the coral or an oyster or something, so first aid it was. We continued to walk along the beach and snorkel elsewhere, laid on the beach and decided we’d see about staying at the lighthouse caravan park. We booked in setup camp and back to Exmouth for supplies ready to watch the sunset. We were back just in time, bourbon and red wine in hand, along with cheese, dip and crackers. We laughed and laughed whilst watching the sunset. It was brilliant.

We headed back to camp to download pics, shower, then cook our BBQ and chill out. A guy named Andy camping next to us came and introduced himself and we chatted for a while. Mel and I then went and enjoyed a 100% meat only BBQ, no salad, no bread, nothing but beef kebabs, chicken satay kebabs, lamb sausages, beef sausages, and lamb chops. And yep, chef Robyn it was. It was great and I enjoyed it a lot and for $10 each … it was a bargain, and yummy!

We then strolled back to our tents to write our blogs and retire for the evening. What a glorious, lazy day. My right thigh got quite burnt and actually we’re both a bit burnt from a day in the sun, but I think it was well worth it. I really hope my tent and I don’t blow away in this wind. It is very very windy.

15th May Saturday
We rode from Exmouth to Cossack. It was once again very windy, but blue skies are still upon us. We packed up out tents in the almighty wind, something I think we’re both starting to master. It’s good going if you can dismantle and pack up your tent on your own in the windiest conditions. We chatted to Andy briefly, took our usual self portraits and off into town we went, with a vision of a ‘bruffin’ each (something we had planned the night before lol). Well, that wasn’t to be, as we were later than yesterday, there were none left. I was shattered, so we grabbed a coffee and Mel grabbed a muffin to which neither was any good. After refuelling, as full as we could as we had 273kms to do in one stretch and both figured if we stuck to 5,000rpm we’d make it. I hit reserve at 260kms and when we stopped in at Nanuturra roadhouse and refuelled, and I still had a few litres left … so I guess 300kms shouldn‘t be out of the question. We pulled into Karatha but the visitors centre was already shut, so I rang directory assistance and got some numbers of the caravan parks shown on the map. None of which had any accommodation, except for a hotel which was $200 per night. I rang another caravan park in the next town and she referred me to a backpackers in Cossack. I rang, and there was one room with 2single beds for $65 per night available. I reserved the room and we headed for Cossack. By this time it was just on dusk so there was no time for mucking around. We try not to be out at this time to avoid kangaroos, cattle, emu’s etc but sometimes things don’t always work out to plan. We made it Cossack on dark and sorted our accommodation. It was a really nice old house and nice place to stay. Certainly good value for money. We didn’t know where we’d be staying and as such hadn’t had dinner or bought anything to drink – and yes, I mean alcohol. But we had been shopping the day before and bought ourselves some cans of tuna, beans, spaghetti etc so luckily we weren’t going to starve, and well, I guess an alcoholic beverage could also wait. We also had some muffins that we’d had for a couple of days, that we had intended to eat for brekky but never got around to it, so it was baked beans for me and spaghetti and meatballs for Mel. I had also purchased a family size Cadbury Turkish delight, so that worked well for dessert. I recharged my Telstra internet, as it appears I’ve used my 1gig in approx. 3weeks and had no credit left. A brief visit on face book and it was bedtime.

Today we rode from Cossack to Sandfire, approx 500kms. It was warm, and its getting warmer everyday. Today it was very windy, like it has been for the majority of the trip, or so it feels anyway. But it was exceptionally windy today. A truck driver named ‘clobsy’ was telling me that we can expect that all the way to Darwin. He also told me that he’s done 10,000kms since last Wednesday. Makes our trip seem menial in regard to time vs kms that is. He also warmed me of the undercover cops that patrol this road. One of which is a blue maloo ute that I’d seen at the Padoo roadhouse, and would never have thought. Lucky Mel was road captain today hey. Clobsy also told me that 5min after we overtook him, he blew a tyre. He was glad we had gone passed when we did. So was I, just quietly.
We left Cossack by 10am, filled up and off we went. We stopped at Port Hedland to check it out briefly and thought we’d try the Chicken Treat’ that seems to be this side of Australia’s KFC. Lets just say, I wont be going back. In fact I’ve decided I’m not eating any more junk food on this trip. I’m done with wasting money on crap, put bluntly. I’m gonna eat simple stuff like tuna and rice crackers, bakes beans and cheese or something.
Anyway Port Hedland is unbelievable in regard to the mining and the port, not to mention the length of the, I assume ‘iron’ trains. I’d hate to be waiting at the railway crossing for one of them, that’s for sure.
Next stop was Pardoo roadhouse and I thought I’d take the opportunity to grab a beer whilst we were stopping. And I bought a coaster (yeh yeh stubby holder).
Off we set again with 150kms til the Sandfire Roadhouse. We are staying in Dongers. Its very small, 2single beds and not enough room for us both to put luggage in … well, if we did you wouldn’t be getting in or out. Not sure if it’s a good bed, cos my luggage is on it at the moment, but I’m sure I’ll find out soon enough. It cost us $25 each and considering we paid $20ea to stay in a powered tent site at Exmouth, I’m not complaining.
For dinner there was not a lot of choice in the roadhouse, well not by the time we decided we were ready for dinner anyway. Toasted sandwiches were basically it. We decided to use our salsa, tuna and a packet of our corn rice cake things. It was pretty good actually. Once again followed by what was left of the Turkish delight chocolate.

We are now 3days behind schedule. We were supposed to be in Broome on Thursday and its now Sunday so we’ve been discussing our options on how to pick up the days before the end of the trip. We decided to play it by ear and see what happens, where.

It’s been about 4,700kms since we serviced the bikes and we will need to start looking at our options and making decisions about where we’ll need to arrange this. Personally I’d be happy to buy the oil and filters and do it ourselves, although may be a bugger without a socket wrench and a man. Yes, I’ll admit it sometimes, well actually more so when someone else does my oil change, I find it can be hard to take off, but when I’ve done them myself I can usually get the sump plug and filter undone. As I did them up myself whilst at Matt and Rosie’s place, I should be able to get them undone. See what happens anyway.

17th May Sandfire to Broome
I had a good sleep and awoke by sunrise. There was chickens and a good looking rooster outside our donger when I awoke. Spectacular sunrise and of course I took pictures, then Mel and I went to the roadhouse to sus out what the options were for brekky. We ended up sharing a chicken and cheese toasted sandwich and both had coffees. We decided we would fill up our jerry cans for the first time, as we had to cover 290kms without any option of fuel. I went onto reserve at about 220kms, so it was prudent that we did use the jerry cans.

For a change it wasn’t windy, which was nice and it was before 9am when we left, so it was relatively cool and I to me, it’s the best part of the day. I had skippy decide it was his time to cross the road, but had plenty of time to slow down, whilst at the same time he sped up when he saw/heard me coming. No drama’s.

A straight run, our usual regular stops and a stop to use the jerry cans. A few kms out from Roebuck plains was spectacular, you could see forever and you could see the reflection of the clouds in the water in the far distance, just magnificent.

We fuelled up and into Broome we headed. After checking out Cable Beach, having an ice cream and then trying to decide our options in regard to accommodation, we headed for the Broome visitors centre. The YHA that we had wanted to stay at was booked out, so we ended up in the Broome Motel which was very expensive for what it was, imo. $170/night for a superior twin. It was very humid and I had to peel off my leather jacket. I have to say I love my ‘skins’ and wouldn’t do without them. I’m considering getting a top also, as it would be a lot easier to take off my leather jacket.

After doing the typical girl thing and going shopping we sat on our balcony, drank bourbon, ate rice crackers and dip and after consuming most of the bourbon decided it was time to check out the social side of things. We ended up at the Roebuck Bay Hotel which was very different to any pub I’ve been. I think we were two of only a half a dozen people that weren’t aboriginal. It was karaoke night and it was a very interesting night. We had a ball. And yes, we’d had enough to drink to join in on the karaoke. We sang Copperhead Road, which I sucked at, and later sang Lady Marmalade which ended with a big round of applause. We danced and danced and had a lot of fun.
My foot had started bleeding pretty badly and whilst I was in the bathroom washing it and my thong, an aboriginal lady came in and we sat on the floor and she did some magic on my foot. We chatted with them and also got harassed a lot for drinks, cigarettes and money, but it was all good and there was no drama when we said no. I ended up buying the aboriginal lady a beer to say thank you. At the end of the evening she took off her necklace, which was a ‘Kimberley’ stone and suggested it would help also heel the cut on my foot. I was very happy and honoured to be given such a gift.
We strolled home and on the way I decided I wanted Macdonalds but as it was late only the drive through was open and they wont serve you on foot. There was a guy in the carpark on a scooter, which I must say are very popular here and are zooming, or rather brooming around lol. I approached him and he dinked me through the drive through so I could buy a burger. It was fun.

Today it was sprinkling when I woke up, and very humid. Decided a couple of coffee’s was what I needed to help the hangover, not to mention a couple of Aspro clear. I made a couple of phone calls and caught up with friends and family and then into Chinatown I walked.
Ended up having Subway for lunch, shopping and buying a pair of swimmers.
We booked our pre sunset camel ride and caught the bus to cable beach to laze around prior to the ride. The water was magic and we enjoyed splashing around and just generally playing tourist. Shortly thereafter it was time for the camel ride. It was great, I enjoyed it a lot and it wasn‘t expensive, which was a nice change. It cost $20 for 30min and the women received a free set of pearl earrings. Mel looked like she was packing it, after she saw me get on my camel and the camel get up. It’s hectic, but getting off is even more hectic. We did a 30min ride and both agreed we wouldn’t have wanted to do the 1hr ride. It was a lot of fun and a couple of the workers took pictures for us. It was a lazy day, but a most enjoyable one.
After our camel ride, it was off the bar to watch the sunset. We took pictures and back on the bus headed to our hotel to grab some dinner and do a load of washing. We put the washing on and walked to Eagle boys pizza, as we had planned to get some garlic bread to go with the lasagne we bought from coles yesterday. Mel didn’t feel like lasagne so we grabbed some chinese instead. It wasn’t very nice, but hey you get that occasionally.

The laundry at the hotel closed at 7pm and we made it back just as it was being locked by the manager. We pleaded with him to reopen it so we could put our stuff in the dryer, which he did albeit reluctantly. We’ve found that we have to use the dryer twice every time we wash or else everything doesn’t get dry properly and we told the manager that, but after Mel went back and put on the 2nd round for the dryer, he said we’d have to get our clothes out in the morning as he was not gonna reopen it again for us tonight. Bit of a bummer, but hey you get that occasionally.
Now I’m catching up on my blog so that I stay up to date and I’m ready for bed.
I know I’m missing a few days from earlier on, but I’m doing my best now to write something everyday.
Over n out til next time.

Signing on 4th May 1.12 am (Sydney time, not sure wot time it is here tbh)
Well, I awoke this morning and Mel was on the computer, and about to go for her usual early morning walk. I decided to stay in bed although within minutes I was up and awake and not feeling the need to lay in bed. I decided to upload my pics from yesterday and put them on face book and then check my 2G2K emails.

I started to get ready and pack up (which entails packing all the electrical cords, clothes, camera’s, pj’s, shoes, etc) A ritual Mel and I are starting to get used to. I must say, spending days on end when I only have my beloved explorer bag is not a problem at all, in fact I love it. But when you have you’re explorer bag packed to the brim, to the point that you have to ‘tier’ up, and you have a full set of saddle bags that you’ve never ridden with, plus a tent, sleeping bag and a jerry can . . . It can become a tad tiresome. Its hard work to be honest.
You know what though? I’m not disliking it. As much as it may be inconvenient or ‘not easy’ I don’t mind. The fact that I’ve got additional luggage isn’t an issue, cos I know I’m on a long holiday. Its not the usual week away, in which case I would only have my explorer bag, so the fact that I’m on an awesome holiday, to me, makes that more than worthwhile and so worth it!

Anyway back to my story . . . I commenced packing and Mel walks in with a coffee for me. I was very grateful, just what the doctor ordered. I had been contemplating walking to grab one but didn’t want to leave the room in case Mel returned from her walk and I had the key, so I decided to wait. Yes, I was very happy when she walked in with a coffee for me. ThanX Mel !

We went outside to drink our coffee’s and have a ciggi. The guys from next door approached us and asked if we would do an interview with them for their documentary. Mel quite promptly agreed. (not sure if at this stage she knew full well that I’d be the one doing the talking, or not lOl). Anyway we did the interview, of which I did a lot of the talking being the networker that I am (allegedly). I think it went well, although I don’t remember much, I was quite nervous to be honest. Mel did great, and I reckon we both got outta the box.
We completed the interview, and said our goodbyes.
We lubed our chains, checked my tyre pressures, fuelled up and off we went headed for Baladonia or Norseman if possible.
Magic to see such blue skies and the clouds were just magic. If you know me, you know its all about clouds and dead trees. Anyway fuel stops approx every 100kms until we hit the longest straightest road in Australia which is 146.6kms or 90 mile straight.

A top days riding, albeit still windy. Seems the wind is following us around the country. I’m starting to get used to riding on an angle, the lean is pretty full on. Fighting to lean into a corner in some instances too. Its great to see blue skies and have the temperature at ultimate.

The bikes have not missed a beat. I lurve my 9. Can’t thank Tim enough, for his help in getting the bike ready. Seriously, cheers Tim!!
We’ve done only 4000 odd kms now and its day 10, and considering we did 5,500kms in 6days last year on the Border Run, and it didn’t seem like an issue, I’ve found this trip different. I guess we’ve spent time with friends and slept in rather than pushed cos we had to return home.
Completing the sort of kms we did then seems an effort for me atm. Having said that though, I’ve found that the past couple of days, we’ve started to crunch good kms without an issue. Except for the sore wrists that is. Ok, truth be told my neck is pretty darn sore, but that’s a result of the car accident I was in, 2weeks prior to leaving for my trip. I need to stretch more often and/or I need a massage, badly. For the past 2nights Ive started with my sit ups and push ups, and will try to maintain a regime to get back into my regular exercising. But, yeh I’m hurting when I sit, but hey I love my holidays, I love riding and just loving being somewhere Ive never been.
Today we had a pretty good day. I enjoyed giving the 9 some on ‘Australia’s longest straightest road’ I must say. It was fun.

We arrived at Baldonia Roadhouse and we were both ready to call it a day. We happily booked into the backpackers for $30 each. I must say I was surprised when we rode to our evenings accommodation. I shall post a pic and I’m sure you’ll understand why.

It was awesome though. We both had a great night. Sat out in the middle of nowhere, in peace and quiet, except for our own conversation and laughter that is. We watched the sun go down, drank bourbon and took it all in. I thought it was great. This is living!
We grabbed some dinner and decided to play some pool, something I must admit I love to play, but haven’t played for a few months. To my surprise I didn’t play too badly. Anyway, we had a ball.
We got asked about our t shirts. We sold stickers and networked. I enjoyed it. I noticed that she had a pouch and it looked like it was full. Not long thereafter it moved and no joke, the joey popped his head out. It was priceless, something Ive never witnessed let alone be sitting there patting the mother in the meantime. What an experience.

We went outside to have a ciggi and whilst there sitting and chatting a kangaroo came up and basically sat beside me. I was very scared. I was expecting it to wack me with its paw or something …. Dumb, I know but still, I was truly scared. No doubt the pics Mel took will prove that. She also had a joey in her pouch and we were very lucky cos he poked his head out. The chef from the restaurant came out and gave us a pear to feed the kangaroo which was really cool. Mel and I took some self portraits with the kangaroo. The chef came out again only this time with a weetbix to give her. She really enjoyed it. So much so, that she put weetbix all over Mel. It was very funny. What an experience, it was awesome and made my week

Tomorrow we head to Kambalda to visit Isle of Ninja from KSRC and service the bikes.

Finally, I’ve caught up on my blogs

Now, an update on what has been happening up to this point.
Tex, Tim, Jas, Ron and I left Heathcote Macca’s at 8am on Saturday morning and being double demerits for the weekend, we were ready to slowly cruise to Bermagui. I have known Tex for many years but we have never ridden together, so it was great to ride from Sydney to Bermagui with him as part of the group.

We arrived at Bermagui around 1.30pm and checked into the Beach Motel. Shortly after our arrival, Mel showed up and it was time for 2G2K to chill out.

Our Pre-Ride drinks went well. I had a great time and I believe everybody who attended did also. It was great to catch up and share a few drinks with some of the Canberra Riders whom I don’t see often and always have such a blast with when I do. We shared lots of laughs and I had a great night. A walk along the beach in the early hours of the morning was very nice and a swim was most tempting.

We awoke to another glorious day in Bermagui despite it raining in the early hours of the morning, and decided we would wander down to the beach and test the water. The water was cold, but after a short while splashing around, it didn’t take long to warm up. Mel decided to test out the new waterproof Panasonic camera which was a lot of fun and something new to both of us. Mel didn’t want to get her hair wet, so the pics taken were of me swimming under the water. We were amazed at the clarity of the pics and couldn’t wait to download them.

We have not been able to get the camera to work since. Luckily the memory card still worked, so we did get to save them. Looks like that camera will be going in for a warranty claim, although I dare say that Panasonic will have some excuse as to why Mel shouldn’t get a refund. As we bought two identical camera’s, it will be interesting to test my camera to see if the same thing happens.

After getting a few pics of us taken, we departed Bermagui at around 9.30 and headed south via Cobargo. Arthur and Gayle joined Mel and I for the ride down south. I looked in my side view mirrors to see Arthur, Gayle and a set of flashing red and blue lights following. I pulled to the side and hoped that they were going to continue past us. Luckily for me, they continued on, however I was worried that Mel may have been, the one in their sights. Also luckily for Mel, they continued past her also. Being the first day of our trip, the last thing either of us wanted or needed was to be booked for speeding. Especially when I only have 3points to last me til October.

[/caption]

We filled up at Cann River where we met a group of Harley riders who were intrigued by what we were doing. They gave both Mel and I a long sleeve shirt which they had made for their Anzac day for their club. We agreed that we would get a pic taken of us wearing them, at some point during our trip and will post up on the website. I also arranged for a 2G2K poster to be displayed at the service station.

27th April
Tonight we are in Port Albert staying at the Pub, and its 3 girls 3 kawasakis, cos Caroline is joining us for the evening. After a few bourbons Mel and I shared a delicious pork medallion dinner, and we are now very ready for bed. After speaking with the Manager of the pub he said he would arrange a couple of raffles on our behalf. A 2G2K poster was also put up in the main bar.

In the morning we went for a walk around the wharfs of Port Albert, a very pretty and peaceful place. After a few pics, a coffee and some toast we said goodbye to Caroline and Mel and I prepared to depart and head for Melbourne.

Tonight we have our BBQ dinner arranged by Preston MC club at North Coburg. We are staying with Mick and Terrie who had kindly offered to drive us to the dinner. On our way to Melbourne, we decided we needed to do the girl thing and go shopping. I needed to get a Next G internet key, and Mel needed to get a new camera. We stopped in Frankston and went from shop to shop looking for the best deal. I suggested it would be safe to leave our bikes parked on the footpath outside a furniture shop, however upon returning to our bikes the security guard suggested otherwise. Apparently Frankston is equivalent to Minto – basically he said we were lucky all our stuff was still there. I wont be in such a hurry to be so sure of myself next time.  So, after completing our shopping expedition it was time to move on.

I can say that I’m not a fan of Melbourne, well of the traffic there anyway. I went through an orange light which very quickly turned red, although it was not red when I entered the intersection, but they sure do change quicker than in Sydney. From that point on, I was very aware of preparing to stop, should the light change orange, as I really cannot afford to lose points at this stage of the ride. Actually, at any stage of the ride for that matter.

After tackling the traffic in Melbourne and spending some 2hrs to cover 70km, you could say we weren’t happy, not to mention we were going to be late for our BBQ dinner with Preston MC club. We found our way to Craigieburn where our gorgeous guests were awaiting our arrival. A quick shower, a bourbon and off we went. We arrived at dinner an hour late, but we made it. It was great to meet Su of Preston MC club whose support has been extraordinary. A delicious BBQ, a few quiet drinks and lots of chatting was just what we needed.

Preston MC Club had also arranged a raffle with some great prizes which Su had decided to continue running for a short time.

Quite a few people that had confirmed their attendance didn’t show up which was disappointing as I was led to believe there would be quite a big turnout. Despite that, we had a great night and Su has informed us, that $500 was raised from the dinner and raffle tickets sold to date, which was terrific news.

It was great to see and catch up with Sandra Ramsay who now runs Bike me, who I spent two weeks riding around Tasmania with in 2005 and hadn’t seen since. It was great to catch up with Mick Dundee, Seiko and PhotoMike from KSRC, and it was also great to meet Dan, a face book friend. We met some great people and I believe everyone had a good night. We arrived back at Mick and Terrie’s place at about 1am and they were kind enough to put us up at their place in the kids room, so it was a fight for the top bunk.

A great nights sleep and we awoke to scrumptious bacon and eggs. A huge thank you to Mick and Terrie for chauffeuring us to dinner, having us stay overnight and leaving on a full stomach.

To be honest we couldn’t get out of Melbourne quick enough and it was Great Ocean Road here we come! It was a very windy ride from thereon. Based on the weather bureau, I believe the winds ranged from 35-55km/hr and it sure felt like it. Riding behind Mel, I watched as her bike was on lean as a result. Kept us on our toes, that’s for sure.

We conquered the GOR and upon stopping at Apollo Bay for fuel, it was starting to rain and behind us it was pouring, so we were lucky to complete the GOR when we did. We had both discussed the option of whether we would ride the GOR if the weather was bad, but luckily didn’t have to look at alternative options as we had pretty good weather.

As it had been hard work riding in the wind and the intermittent rain all day, and by this stage the rain was starting to catch us, we decided we would pull into Lavers Hill for dinner and find a place to stay. As it happens I was hoping to try the calamari at Lavers Hill, something it is known well for, but the chef is no longer there so unfortunately that was not an option.
We got a cabin for $50 which was basically a box with a bunk, a double bed, a heater and a pub next door which suited us just fine. We arranged for a 2G2K poster to be put up on display at the pub and after some stressful time on the phone with Telstra trying to get my internet key to work, we had dinner and retired to our cabin.

We’ve woken to a very wet and grey day here at Lavers Hill. Yesterday we didn’t get very far at all, in fact we only rode for bout 250kms but it was tiring and it was wet.
We had parked our bikes undercover in the BBQ area, and getting them out of there proved harder than I had anticipated. The grass was very wet after it rained constantly last night and the mud was something we didn’t want to ride on if we could avoid it. Well, my planned exit was not quite what I had in mind. I ended up on the muddy grass and in a predicament that I really didn’t want to be in, but had to deal with it. The rear wheel started spinning and I wasn’t going anywhere. I stopped, took a breath and slowly tried to get out of this mess. What happened next I hadn’t expected but considering my predicament, I guess I wasn’t surprised either. I didn’t get on the gas hard, but due to the very slippery muddy grass, the rear end fishtailed quite badly and I still don’t know how I kept the bike upright. I was shaking after my eventful exit, but was very pleased all was ok. Day 3, and it was looking like I might have had to use one of those extra levers I had bought with me. I’m so very glad I didn’t.

WOW, once again there goes time. Where it went, I have no idea. All I know is that sometimes it just goes nowhere and this is one of those times.

I have been meaning to write a blog for days and for one reason or another, have not gotten to it or made it a priority. I do know one thing, and that is, Mel and I are on holiday and that is something that we have to keep reminding ourselves of, believe it or not.
We also have commitments, but do they, or should they, take priority over our holiday? Good question!!

For me, it hasn’t been something I’ve considered to be honest, until confronted with the fact that we were going to be late to a function. That function being the Preston MC Club BBQ. We were an hour late and were quite stressed about being so. By the same token, we’d spent 2hrs to cover 70kms. Melbourne sux, what can I say. I’m guttered that I didn’t have the camera mounted at the tine, cos I would’ve had some awesome shots of Melbourne at its best . . . Grey, drizzly and slow traffic!

Its our holiday, we are doing what we can to raise money for MARI, whilst enjoying our holiday, whilst also focusing on raising money. Me personally, I’ve found it difficult of late to know exactly where my focus should be. More often than not, I focus on the fundraising moreso than enjoying our holiday. Real answer. I believe we’ve both found it a little difficult to deal with, without actually realising it til only the other day.

We were quite upset or put out, that we were going to be riding a lot of kms in the pouring rain to meet a deadline. It was stressful and I guess unnecessary, although at the time it was necessary. It wasn’t until we thought bout it, that we realised . . . Well, you know what, if we don’t make it, we don’t make it. Do we rearrange the dinner in SA for Friday night to make sure? That is exactly what we did and to be honest it worked out better for us and I’m glad we did.

As we continued on the Great Ocean Road passed the 12 Apostles and other magic places, we decided to stop in Port Campbell for breakfast. The swell was unbelievable, the waves were huge and could be seen for our entire ride along GOR. It was also a fairly windy and we wore wet weather gear for the entire day, mainly due to the cold but the weather also looked unpredictable.

It was an eventful day for me yesterday, with nearly dropping the bike and then have three instances where I could have been pleading with constable plod as to why he shouldn’t book me.

We are now in a lovely place called Robe. We are staying in the pub, but a very nice pub. We decided to take a balcony room which overlooked the ocean and was about 10m away. The ocean could be seen and heard from my bed. It was time to do laundry, so we decided we would grab a bottle of Jim Beam and after some computer time on our balcony decided it was time to sort out our laundry and grab some dinner. We put on a load of washing and ventured into the chinese restaurant for a couple of mixed entrée’s. We ate dinner and drank bourbon in the 24hr Laundromat and had lots of fun and laughs in doing so. Actually we had a great time. In between doing laundry, drinking and talking to friends on the phone, it was a very entertaining and fun night. I guess the fact that I’m on the computer at this hour of the morning proves that.

Yesterday we rode from Robe to Kurralte Park.
Last night we stayed at Neka and Kimmehs place in Adelaide and waking to sunshine this morning was a very welcomed change. We enjoyed a great dinner at the pub and it was great to meet some of my face book friends as well as catch up with Jamie (Steelo), and to meet new faces who belong to SA riders. We sold raffle tickets and some stickers and also received some cash donations. Thank you to Neka for playing tour guide and showing us the known streets, nightclubs etc around the area, and thank you to everyone who came to the dinner, we had a great night.

We are now in Kimba and we could’ve pushed on for another 200odd kms, but we’ve stayed at the pub here before and the accommodation was good and the food was great, so we decided some R&R time was due. Or if the truth be told, I wanted to catch up on my blogs for the website, upload more pics and do some internet banking, cos unfortunately the bills at home don’t stop just cos I’ve gone on holidays.
I’ve been feeling very slack and disappointed in myself for not keeping up to date with the website, and will endeavour to make myself write something everyday, despite how tired I may be. I also plan to get our exercise regime underway, something we had planned to start this week but have been too exhausted or have had functions planned which have prolonged us from starting that regime. Well, that’s my excuse anyway!

Ive suggested to Mel that she use the mens shower as Ive just experienced a cold shower in the womens. We are in the backpackers accommodation of the pub, so we have shared bathroom facilities, but its clean and its comfortable.

We are both very much looking forward to dinner, as breakfast was a sausage roll that we went halves in, and a packet of Burger Rings that we also shared when we arrived here . . . So, yes dinner is a priority at the moment, after a bourbon or two that is.

We had an enjoyable dinner, actually it was a bit too enjoyable as we both ate way too much and felt very very full afterwards. Despite still being tired and not really in a selling mood, I made myself approach people in the pub and as a result, we sold $40 worth of stickers that we were both happy about. We have retired to our room and are planning to leave relatively early in the morning, as we have an 800km day ahead of us tomorrow. Our aim is to reach Eucla.

We are contemplating deferring our dinner with Perth riders which is supposed to be on Friday 7th May, as we have already lost a day and the kms we need to cover to achieve that date are quite a lot. However, at this stage we are still trying our best to meet our planned dates.

Well, that brings me up to date with my website blogs, its now 11.10pm and I haven’t looked at Facebook, nor responded to emails, so I’m going to call it a night and I’ll be back tomorrow . . . right after we’ve started our exercise regime that is lOl. :)

And, that's a wrap!
Over n out..

Day 4 – 5, Melbourne to Lavers Hill

2

Day 4 – Port Albert to Melbourne

After spending a quiet evening with Robyn and Caroline at Port Albert (and having an AWESOME pork medallion for dinner) I awoke again at stupid o’clock. Robyn was also awake so we ducked outside for a smoke and hopped back into bed because it was cold… and then actually managed to fall back asleep, waking up again at about 8am. The girls had their breakfast and then we went for a little walk around town to check it out and then I had my breakfast and Caroline loaded up and was gone and then Robyn and I did the same thing.

The plans for the day had changed – my waterproof camera was flooded on Sunday so no longer working, and Robyn’s 3 internet was not giving her service anywhere so a new camera for me and a Telstra Next G mobile internet thingo for Robyn were in order. Caroline had purchased some goodies from Dick Smith at Frankston so she gave us the address and we set off back to the highway.

Before we even reached the first town it was raining so we pulled over to don the wets and it rained and rained and rained. Fuel in Leongatha and then it rained on us some more as we made our way into the Power Centre at Frankston. We found some undercover parking for the bikes, headed for the food court for some lunch (the little pasta place there is truly awesome, really good food and heaps of it) and then hiked around between JB Hi Fi, Dick Smith, Clive Steel and the Good Guys to find the best deals on what we wanted. I now have a little Fuji camera which also claims to be waterproof… we’ll see… and Robyn now has a Next G mobile thingo. When we got back to the bikes a security guard approached us… apparently we were not supposed to park there. OH well.

We turned out of the car park and onto the main road… and missed the turn for the freeway so ended up on the Nepean Highway and then managed to find our way through to Craigieburn after much frustration in Melbourne traffic. Fkn Melbourne, I don’t think I could stand to live there.

Finally we arrived in Craigieburn and I pulled over and called T who came and found us and led us to their house… and there was Mick (my current hero) with a kiss hello and a cold can of Jimmy… needed that, thanks Mick! We were very late, so a quick call to Su from Prestons to let her know we would be late, then showers and then we were off to Coburg for the Prestons MCC BBQ dinner. We arrived and it was a good night, heaps of people already there, though not as many as we were expecting, apparently it doesn’t rain all the time in Melbourne (coulda fooled me) and Su had been receiving excuses all day. Nevermind, we got to meet some new people and catch up with some other people we hadn’t seen for some time.

About midnight we headed off back to T & Tape’s place where we pretty much went straight to bed.

Day 5 – Melbourne to Lavers Hill

Both Robyn and I were awake about 6:30am, lay about for a bit before getting up in search of coffee. On the puter for a bit before T cooked us bacon and eggs for breakfast (champion). Eventually with the day getting away from us we said our final goodbyes and headed back out into Melbourne traffic one last time – had a good run the way that we had been directed and then hit the ring road and crawled along for a while before eventually we were on the road to Geelong. Stopped in at the service centre for a break then past Geelong and onto Angelsea. And the Great Ocean Road! And it was DRY!!!! Though overcast… that didn’t last too long, by Apollo Bay it started raining and it was quite wet coming into Lavers Hill and then came the fog…. We decided to call it a day at Lavers Hill and got a cabin at the pub. I am now sitting in the corner of the bistro typing this up after having a fantastic penne pollo for dinner… yum yum yum.

Day 3

0

Day three – I woke up at a more decent hour this morning, 6am. Up and at ‘em I went for another walk, this time to the Blue Pool that Gig had been talking about – what an effort, I thought I was going to die walking back up all the stairs and then the killer hill. Anyway an hour later I got back to the room and Rob was packing… our estimated departure time of 8am was more like 9am by the time we stuffed around with strapping our mountains of crap onto the bikes, photos were taken… and finally we were on the road, with Gig and Avartie for company!

The Tyre Ninja had struck, writing 2G2K on each of our tyres :D

We set off on the road to Cobargo where we rejoined the Princes Highway and within about 5km I looked in my mirrors to see the flashing red and blues… damn. Pulled over to the side, the copper slowed down then gunned it past me. Phew.

Stopped at Bega for a smoke and then onto Eden for breakfast, where Rob and I shared a pie, seeing as the sausage rolls weren’t going to be ready for 10 minutes… this might be becoming a theme. IT wasn’t a bad pie didn’t really rate the coffee though! Avartie left us here and Gig, Robyn and I continued on down the Princes Highway, and into Victoria. Fuel at Cann River where Rob and I were gifted with HOOTERS tshirts…

Into Bruthen for another pie (Rogan josh – very nice) and onto Sale for fuel and we farewelled Gig and, upon recommendation from the HOOTERS boys we are now in Port Albert for the night, where we have been joined by Princess (Caroline) from Canberra Riders:D

Day 1 – 2 Canberra to Bermagui

3

I have decided to try and keep a daily ride diary for this trip. We’ll see how that goes.

I left Canberra at I have no idea what time on a wet Saturday morning. I rode out on a very wet Federal Highway but it soon dried out towards Bungendore where I stopped for a quick check as I was paranoid that I had left my wallet behind! And onto Braidwood for a rest, and onto the Clyde where just as I was approaching the end of the hairpins I could smell brakes and sure enough there was a truck (well I couldn’t see it then) and about 200 cars lined up behind it. So we crawled down the mountain, I made good use of the overtaking lanes, and eventually, just coming into the bay I got in front of all of the traffic.

Had a good run over the rollercoaster into Mogo then stopped at Moruya for fuel and into Bermagui. Thought I’d be early, I’d relax for a bit, except Robyn, Tim and Jase were already here so it was out of the leathers and straight to the bar. The crowd rolled in and the party began, we took over the balcony and people drifted between the balcony, the bistro and their rooms. As the bar closed we took a walk to the beach, had an adventure seeking a strange light and just chilling before heading to bed at some time – I couldn’t sleep for ages, think it was about 2am when I finally went to sleep… and woke up at 5am. This not sleeping thing is really starting to annoy me.

After lying in bed looking at the bunk bed above me for a while, I got up and headed for the beach – the Dawn service was just concluding. I spent about an hour and a half dawdling my way up the beach, sat on the rocks just chilling for a while before making my way back… I got a bit excited jumping in the waves and ended up a bit wetter than intended. Sitting on the rocks up the far end of the beach, no one else in sight, maaaan I was itching for my guitar! Eventually I made my way back to the room and Darrin and Jase were up so we chatted for a bit before heading back to the beach where I succumbed and went for a proper swim.

After I had a hot shower it was photo time with Tex, and people started getting ready to leave in dribs and drabs… watched the parade and eventually I got breakfast which was AWESOME. Bacon and eggs and toast and sausages and a beans mix with chorizo sausage. Faded for a bit after that so just chilled in the room until a few hours later chucked on the cozzies, grabbed Gig to head to the beach. Robyn and I hit the water and it was coooold but we soon warmed up. Had good laughs testing the capabilities of the new camera (though I think it’s stuffed already, won’t turn on anymore, the ones we got were good though!) Champagne was had but eventually it got cold so headed back for another shower and then fish and chips for dinner, followed by hanging out in Gig’s room (she has a sitting room!!) for a bit and now, here I am writing the diary thing (after having hit FB of course).

Tomorrow is an earliest start, hoping to get away around 8am, though both Rob and I have to repack all our stuff…. LOL

4 more sleeps !!

Signing on 11.30pm Tues 20th April.
WOW, where did that time go? What can I say, other than I believe a lot has transpired in that time.
We have now secured dates, and functions are starting to take shape. We've arranged shirts, stickers, raffle books and prizes. A special mention and huge thanQ to David Cunneen of Cunneen Signs for donating 500 stickers for us to sell, with 100% of sales going straight to MARI.

A couple of motorcycle clubs have had their own fundraisers and have chosen to donate to our 2G2K everyday hero account, which is terrific. Our everyday hero accout is now standing at $1,235.00.

This afternoon I had my first radio interview. I was on TV, on the Alan Jones show many years ago, but that didnt help me one iota. I was quite nervous and I guess a little unsure, as to what to expect. Although, having said that, I know what I'm like when you start talking to me about something that I'm passionate about … and you wont shut me up!

After the initial few minutes, I guess? Its hard to tell how long you're talking for. I dare say, that has something to do with the adenalin and nerves also.
I thoroughly enjoyed the experience to be honest, and when I listened to the show at home via the internet, I was very surprised and pleased with the outcome.

A huge thanQ to Rob, Tim and Phil at Ride Rage Radio (2RRR) for their support and enthusiasm. And thanQ for making the experience such a pleasant one …. you guys, are just too easy to talk to!! ThanQ so much for having me on the show and cheers Tim, for the extra bit of a push that I needed.  The more I reflect on the experience, the more I realise exactly how much I got out of it.

For me, yes I definately got 'outta the box' and loved it, I have to say.

The interview can be found here http://www.riderageradio.com/thisweek.html and I have just been told that www.mcnews.com.au will be posting up the interview also, which is great news.

Ok I've been trying to write a blog for the past couple of weeks and just havent got there until now. I was involved in a car accident with dad on the Easter weekend and lost a few days because of it. Luckily for me, my neck is not as sore as it was and we are both ok. Funnily enough I was offered a massage only yesterday, however it was not quite the type of massage I had in mind. So it looks like the massage I had in mind, will have to wait until my return.

Only 4 more sleeps and I haven't even packed yet. I still have a couple of things I need to buy and a couple of things yet to do, but it seems things are coming together.

Who am I kidding, I've just cleared my bedroom and yes, its carpeted … just hadn't seen it for a while. I went through all the charges I need to take, leads etc and made sure camera batteries are charged up. Ive started to put some clothes in a pile along with other items I intend to take. Hmmm, suddenly my explorer bag which I adore and very seldom have extended fully, is looking like its gonna be full. Well, based on the size of the pile Im creating.

ThanQ to the KSRC members that bought our shirts, we sold a total of 47 which have been sent out and I've already worn mine to work. I'm very happy with how they look. They have come up really well. A huge thank you to Rob of RT Screen Printing for his efforts and support throughout the entire process, we couldn't have done it without you! ThanX Rob.

The ZX9: well just on 80,000km and my bike has undergone the following in prep for the trip
• new Michelin Road 2’s fitted,
• fork seals were replaced (a bear hug goes out to my personal mechanic for picking up on that problem – once again, thanX Tim),
• Oil n filter, new brake pads, brakes bled, coolant replaced, everything that needed to be greased was, and not to mention any missing fairing brackets, screws etc were all replaced and even made to fit. Tim, you have gone above and beyond what any great mechanic would do, let alone be expected to do! You are a legend, and seriously, I cannot thank you enough for the efforts you have gone to, and for your support,
• Tune up and carbies balanced (thanQ very much Scott of Battyes Bikes for first class service and support).
Even though I may not be packed and ready, the nine certainly is!!

Our raffle is starting to take shape with the following items so far, and even moreso after a phone call I received from Tex of Bundys Bikes today telling me he would donate a couple of things. ThanQ so very much Tex and Bundy, very generous of you, and your support is invaluable.
• Full bike service and dyno $650 donated by Bundy's Bikes
• Set of Bridgestone tyres $550 donated by Bundy's Bikes
• Trailer mate $250 donated by Kaneg
• Rivet flash jacket $250 donated by me
• Tow anywhere in Sydney Metro $110 donated by Anywhere Motorcycle Transport
• Fuzzy Lids $50 donated by Fuzzy Lids
• Set of gloves $60 donated by Sydney City Motorcycles
• Magnum of wine and cooler $50 donated by Cox Kelly Fine Wines Cheese & Chocolate
• 3x Full Circle CD's $50 donated by Jerry

ThanQ very much to everyone, that has donated prizes to help us raise money for MARI. Without your contribution, none of this would be possible.

We will be selling raffle tickets throughout OZ for the duration of our trip and the raffle will be drawn upon our return to Sydney on 12th June. I am hoping that St Vincents will be able to attend that event, as we would love for them to draw the prizes on our behalf.

So far, we have finalised the following FUNdraising events;
VIC: 27th April – Preston MC Club, North Coburg VIC – BBQ Dinner $15/head with drinks at bar prices and all proceeds going to MARI. Thanks to Preston MC Club for their extraordinary efforts in helping get this event underway, and for the generosity of offering their club rooms as the venue. A special mention and thanQ goes out a couple of the older PMCC members, Evelyn aged 78, and husband Leo 82, ex Aussie champion as they are looking after the catering on this evening.

WA: 7th May – Perth riders, we are currently in the midst of organising a group ride from Scarborough to Alfreds Kitchen in Guildford, boasting of 40 different burgers. An experience, Im very much looking forward to, amongst so many others. I do enjoy food very much and looking at the menu, I think Perth riders have found the place for me!

It is now quite early in the morning and I really shouldnt have had that late afternoon coffee, followed by a very large can of Monster Energy …. certainly doesnt help with getting sleep, although it certainly helped catch up on my site blog. Having said that if I dont try to go to sleep now, I will not be getting up for work in four hours time, thats for sure.
With only four sleeps to go, thats me signing off at 2.00am.
Over n out.
